He [AAT] is Ahmed ibn Ali ibn Ibrahim ... with a tree that starts at sayydi Mawlana Imam al-Husain [AAT]. He is known as the father of the youth [Abi-al-Fetyan], the honorable, the Alawian, asayyd Ahmed, who was know as al-Badawi because he used to veil most of his face.
He [AAT] was born on 596H, in the city of Fas in Morocco. When he was seven years old, hisfather heard a voice in his sleep saying "Oh, Ali, move to honorable Mecca! We have some matters in that". So they traveled to Mecca for four years.
He [AAT] lived in Mecca and was famous for his courage and was called al-Attab. His brother tought him Qur'an when he was eleven years old. Then his status changed and he left the company of people. He became silent, and talked only with signs. He used to fast a lot. He even used to fast for forty days in a row without any food or drink. He used to look up to the sky much.
Then he was told in his sleep "Go to Tanta". So he left Mecca and went to Iraq, visited the shrines of the saints of Allah there, then in the the year 637H, in the month of Rabi' al-Awal, assayyd a-Badawi traveled to Tanta. He stayed in the house of a sheikh of the sheikhs of this city called Ab-Shokhayt. But he went ot roof of his room kept looking to the sky for long times. that is why he was called as-Setouhy [the roof man].
Many children loved him, two of them, Abdel-Aal and Abdel-Magid, followed him and became two of his greatest Morids [seekers] afterwords.
From his followers of the sheikhs, the judge of the judges, Taqei-addin ibn Daqiq al-Eid, although ibn Daqiq al-Eid used to deny the status of sayydi al-Badawi. Once ibn Daqiq al-Eid sent to sayydi Abdel-Aziz ad-Dereini [AAH] and said to him "Examine this Badwian for me, in these cases. As many people became concerned with him. If he answered you about it, then he is a saint of Allah, Almighty". Sayydi Abdel-Aziz ad-Dereini went to him and asked him about those cases, so sayydi Ahmed al-Badawi answered him with the best of answers, not only that, but he also told him where to find these answers in the books and pages. After that sayydi Abdel-Aziz ad-Dereini used to say about assayyd al-Badawi "He is a sea which bottom is unreachable".
Some of his famous poetry [AAH]:
[I am the veiled (Molatham). Ask about me and about my high spirits
my will shall tell you about what I said with my own mouth]
[I am as-Setohi, and my name is Ahmed al-Badawi
the greatest of the men and the Imam of people in al-Haram (Ka'ba)]
[Rejoice my seeker, and never be afraid
and hang out with my Dhikr in between the Ban and the flag]
[If my seeker calls on me while he is in the waves
of the seas, he will survive the power of the annihilation]
He [AAH] also said:
[Crazy people, but the secret of their craziness
is very high, on its door step the mind will prostrate]
He passed away [AAH] on 675H, i.e. he lived for 79 years. He was buried in his great Masjid in Tanta, which gets visitors from all overvist sayydi Ahmed and get blessings from his honorable shrine. He [AAH] made sayydi Abdel-Aal as his successor on his Tariqa.
