Cutting Kinship Ties in the Name of Islam
©Ali Gomaa - Grand Mufti of Egypt - 2012
http://ali-gomaa.com/?page=scholary-out ... etails=180

I received a letter from a young Muslim woman who first of all I would like to thank deeply for her keenness to know the opinion of religion on the matter of spending time with her mother during Christmas and I equally admire her kindness in keeping ties with her mother and her eagerness to demonstrate an excellent example of how Islam is like.

I am nonetheless appalled by the unauthentic opinions of some self claimed scholars who equate spending time with one's non Muslim family during Christmas and the like with shirk or polytheism! This opinion is rather a mere aberration of the true authentic teachings of Islam both in letter and spirit.

Islam is a religion of mercy and it is an all encompassing value which includes all humans regardless of their religious affiliations, cultural differences and ethnic backgrounds and it encompasses plants, animals along with inanimate objects as well. In other words, the concept of mercy in Islam is so grandeur that it envelopes the whole universe, wouldn't it fit one's own mother too?
As a matter of fact God in the Quran did not only allow us to keep ties with one's non Muslim families but He raised the level of recommendation and made it an obligatory act which Muslims should abide by and this is obvious in the Quran when God said, " But if they (your parents) endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Me [in repentance]… 31:15

In this noble verse, God commanded us to keep warm ties with our families even when they exert their utmost efforts and place pressures on us to leave our religion so what about those who show respect to our religious choices and do not insult our belief in any way or form, should we not even be more eager to show extreme kindness and envelop them with mercy in our sayings and deeds to be a real embodiment of what Islam is all about?
Muslims show utter love to God's creation in general as a sign of reverence to their divine origin and Islam placed unprecedented importance to the concept of high morals and made a unique connection between good ethical standards and between faith and creed. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said "The nearest of you to me in the Day of Judgment are the ones who have the highest morals". Therefore we are commanded to show kindness to people irrespectively and to treat them with mercy and love and to refrain from discriminating against them based on their religious choices, cultural backgrounds or the like.

There is no legal impediment to participating in celebrating the birth of Jesus (peace be upon him). Islam is an open system and its followers believe, respect and honor all the prophets and messengers, and treat the followers of other religions with kindness in accordance to the words of God the Almighty:

And dispute ye not with the People of the Book, except in the best way. [Al-'Ankabut, 46]

Jesus the son of Mary, peace be upon him, is one of the Prophets who are characterized with determination, resolution and patience. Prophet Muhammad [pbuh] said: "I am more entitled to Jesus the son of Mary than anyone in this life and in the Hereafter; no prophet has been sent between us." Every Muslim believes that Jesus is a human prophet who performed great miracles, such as reviving the dead and curing the sick by the will of God the Almighty.

This was not because he was a god or the son of God in the sense of physical procreation—God is exalted above this. Celebrating the day of the birth of Jesus is an act of belief regardless of Christian convictions in his regard. Therefore, participate in your friends and family's celebrations, eat with them and refrain from eating pork and drinking alcohol with tact and civility. Do not pay any attention to anyone who wants to ruin the relation between you and your family and others in the name of Islam because Islam is free from all of this.

IBN AL-HAJJ AL-FASI [737 A.H]:
CELEBRATING NON-MUSLIM HOLIDAYS & EXCHANGING GIFTS
BY USTADH ABDUS SHAKUR BROOKS
http://www.al-masalik.com/uwa0z/

I was asked concerning the rule of exchanging gifts during Christmas or participating in related activities. Below follows a detailed discussion I traslated by the erudite Maliki scholar Ibn Al-Hājj Al-Fāsi [737 A.H/ Cairo] who addressed this matter centuries before us in Cairo, Egypt where there was a presence of some Jewish and Christian communities. It shows that this matter was an issue of concern long before modern times. Ibn Al-Hājj makes the matter clear first by explaining what the people were doing during his time, then addressing the rule by stating the position of the early Imams and foremost the book of Allah and the sunnah.

Ibn al-Hajj Al-Fāsi mentioned the following in his book Al-Madkhal under the chapter heading ” Concerning Some Holidays/Festivals of The Jews and Christians”:

What [was mentioned perviously] was regarding the festivals/holidays [al-mawāsim] that are [falsely] attributed to the shari’ah but are actually not.

Now what remains for us to discuss are those festivals that people [meaning Muslims] have become accustom to practicing in spite of knowing that they are solely festivals of the Jews and Christians. For verily some of the people of these times [from amongst the Muslims] imitate them and participate with them in honouring these holidays. Oh, if it had only been that the common people were the only ones doing it! but in fact many of those who are assumed to be people of knowledge also engage in such actions in their homes, assisting his household in celebrating it. Furthermore, he brings happiness to his household, both the elder and the young, by spending generously on them according to his assumption [that such act is worthy simply because it brings happiness]. In fact, some of them even exchange gifts with the Jews and Christians on their festivals/holidays and send for them what they need to conduct their festivals/holiday, and thus what those Muslims are actually doing is assisting the Jews and Christians in increasing their unbelief. Some of them send lamb, and others green melon, and others dates and other fruits that are in season although most of them send all of these things. This, all of what was mentioned, contradicts the noble shari’ah.

[The author] of Al-U’tbīyah reported that Ashhab [ibn Abd al-‘Azīz al-Qaisī 203 A.H / Cairo] , a senior companion of Imam Malik said:

Somebody said to Malik: “Do you see anything wrong with a man giving his Christian neighbour a gift in repayment for a gift the neighbour had given to him?”. He replied “I do not agree with that. Allah [exalted is He] says “O you who believe, do not take My enemy and your enemy as friends/helpers/protectors by giving them your love when they have disbelieved in what has come to you of the truth . . . [Al-Mumtahinah 58:1]”.

Ibn Rushd [520 A.H/ Cordoba] (May Allah show him mercy) said:

His [meaning the person who questioned Malik] statement “in repayment for a gift the neighbour had given to him” note that one is not supposed to accept a gift from a Christian [in the first place] because the purpose of giving a gift is to show one’s love and affection, for the Prophet [may peace and blessings be upon him] said: “Give gifts to one another, and you will love one another and any grudge [you bear for one another] will go away.” However, if one made the mistake of accepting a gift from a Christian and it was too late to do anything about it, then the best thing to do is to repay him for it so that the Christian should not have anything over him on account of a favour he extended to him.

Malik (May Allah have mercy on him) was asked about eating together with a Christian from the same plate. He replied “I prefer that he refrain from that. He should not befriend a Christian.” Ibn Rushd explained that the reason for his dislike of taking a Christian as a friend is obvious since Allah says “You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day loving those who oppose Allah and His messenger even though they were their fathers or sons or brothers or close kin . . .” [Al-Mujādalah 58:22].” Thus, a Muslim is obligated to hate for Allah those who disbelieve in Him and who take others as gods along with Him and who deny His messenger (may peace and blessing be upon him). Eating with a Christian from one plate brings about love and affection between them and for from that perspective it is objectionable, even if one knows that the Christian’s hand is clean.

Furthermore in Mukhtasar Al-Wādihah [ by Fadl ibn Salamah - 319 A.H ] reported that Ibn al-Qāsim [191 AH, the foremost student of Imam Malik] was asked about going out with the Christians on the boats they ride during their holidays and he objected to that fearing that the wrath [of Allah] should afflict them on account of their unbelief which brought them together. He [Fadl ibn Salamah] said:

Ibn al-Qāsim objected to a Muslim giving a Christian a gift on his holiday in repayment for a gift the Christian had given him [on the occasion of the Christian holiday]. He [Ibn al-Qāsim] considered that honouring their holiday and supporting him in rectifying his unbelief. Do you not see that it is not lawful for a Muslim to sell the Christians anything that helps facilitate their holiday, whether it be meats, condiments, clothing, or lending them a means of transportation, or assisting them in any way in their religion, because that involves giving honour to their shirk [associating others with Allah] and assisting them in their unbelief. In fact, the rulers must prohibit the Muslims from doing that, and that is the opinion of Malik and others; indeed, I do not know of any scholars who are in disagreement concerning that. Celebrating Christmas with the Christians - Halal or Haram?
Gibril Haddad

Wa alaykum as-Salam,

It is positively impermissible to celebrate Christmas with the Christians as it is the soul of tashabbuh (resemblance) and takes one out of the pale of Islam according to one of two opinions related from the Imams of the early Muslims, the other being that one is an evil person for doing so.

In addition, a report from Sayyidina `Umar, Allah be well-pleased with him, explicitly forbids the Muslims from any connection whatsoever with their festivals.

It is not a question of "their Milad, our Milad." Neither milla is actually imitating the other as Christmas existed before Islam, and Mawlid exists obliviously of Christmas. In addition, the celebration Christmas has nothing to do with celebrating the birth of the Prophet `Isa; rather, they celebrate the birth of "the Son of God," with all its Mithraic and Dionysiac connotations. Even though I have nothing but the best memories of three decades of such celebrations, I have to say in conscience that it is a pagan festival. What is more, it is historically rooted in the European pagan winter solstice celebrations which preceded the beginnings of Christian history.

The real and practical question is: Should we return their greetings? As for one's private non-Muslim relatives and silat al-rahm, there must be cordiality and love but there must also be a sincere and consuming desire for right guidance and faithful good advice to them. As for non-relatives then it can be compared to relatives telling you during Easter: "Christ is risen!" One cannot stand mute but rather should answer: He never died in the first place; or take some such stand (such as basic absence from the places and times of such conversations) as clearly demarks one from any type of assent or confirmation of misguidance.

Should we visit them as a matter of protocol, especially in case of a political arrangement of coexistence such as in Lebanon for example? Here also the fatwa of Sh. Muhammad ibn Ja`far al-Kattani in his Nasiha li Ahl al-Islam is an emphatic NO, but the reality of practice in the history of Lebanon, for one, is different. The Mufti of the Republic and other Muslim representatives will even visit churches and sit in their front pews on certain occasions.

But for such to take place in a literally "purely" Muslim country such as Pakistan, all we can say is La hawla wala quwwata illa billah and remember the hadith of the Holy Prophet, upon him blessings and peace: "Two types of drunkenness shall be observed among you [Muslim]: the drunkenness of ample living and the drunkenness of ignorance."

Was-Salam,
gibril

Family Christmas celebration
Answered by Shaykh Gibril F Haddad
http://spa.qibla.com/issue_view.asp?HD= ... 32&CATE=87

Question:
Is it Permissible to go to ones family’s house on Christmas if one is Muslim and they are Christian, if ones intention is not to celebrate Christmas but to have a family get together? Is it permissible to give them gifts at this time out of love for them? Is it permissible to eat of their food there also so long as it is permissible food and Halal, meaning no meat or pork? And is it permissible to Fast on this day (Christmas) and do a lot of dhikr in memory of Isa (Alayhi Salam)?
Answer:

Wa `alaykum as-Salam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh:

Keeping family ties is an obligation on every Muslim, i.e. with one's parents. If wine is served then such meals or gatherings are devoid of blessing and one should neither condone nor participate in them except for the minimum presence that filial respect demands.

As for fasting on Christmas and doing a lot of dhikr in memory of `Isa, then no, one should rather observe all the well-known Sunna fasts such as every Monday and Thursday, the three "white days" in the middle of the month, or every other day; and one should do a lot of salawat on the Prophet, upon him blessings and peace, and convey the reward of dhikr and acts of worship and good deeds to him; and then, from him, to all other Prophets and Awliya including `Isa, upon him peace.

And Allah knows best.

Frågor om sociala relationer
http://ghazali.se/sociala_fragor.htm

------------------------
Not:
Å andra sidan skriver han på qibla:
it will be impermissible to eat with non-Muslims (or even Muslims) if it entails one participating in unlawful things, or if the food party is connected to a religious event of the non-Muslims.
http://spa.qibla.com/issue_view.asp?HD= ... 2&CATE=107

------------------------

Attending Christmas Festivities of One’s Non-Muslim Family
http://seekersguidance.org/ans-blog/200 ... im-family/

December 26th, 2009
Answered by Sidi Waseem Hussain

Question: Is it permissible for a convert to attend his family’s Christmas celebrations?

Answer: Assalamu Alaykum Warahmatullah,
It would be permissible to attend such an event, since it would be from keeping ties with ones family. One can attend the social gatherings, but should discretely abstain from actively taking part in any “religious” activities.

Några frågor gällande julen
besvarade av Muftî Ismail Moosa
http://fatwabanken.se/index.php/compone ... agor-julen
